Identify why X is asking for a number
Begin with the specific phone confirmation or login challenge shown in your own account. A successful contact check does not automatically configure two-factor authentication. A challenge addressed to a number already on the account also cannot be received by selecting an unrelated new number.
Check the eligibility of text-message 2FA
X’s help reserves text-message two-factor authentication for Premium subscribers and says availability can vary by country and carrier. An SMS activation does not provide a Premium subscription or expand that coverage. Verify that the text-message method is actually offered in your account before considering reception.
Keep app and security-key methods distinct
X also describes authentication apps and security keys as two-factor methods. They have their own setup and login process; their credentials do not arrive through an SMS number. Choose the method you intend to retain and read the corresponding prompt before entering any code.
